Understanding Pet Care in Halifax
Halifax’s maritime climate and geography create a set of pet care concerns that set it apart from larger inland cities. A few stand out:
- Nova Scotia has one of the longest tick seasons in Canada, running from early spring through to late autumn. Many pet owners don’t realize the season starts as early as March, well before they’ve thought to ask a vet about prevention.
- A damp, humid climate year-round means some pets, particularly dogs with floppy ears, are more prone to recurring ear infections and skin conditions that can quietly worsen before they’re noticed.
- Salty air, coastal puddles, and road brine in winter can irritate paws and skin, particularly in pets that spend time outdoors near the waterfront.
- Fewer specialist veterinary clinics than larger cities means in-person wait times for a non-urgent concern can run longer than expected, and the peninsula layout limits how many practices are easy to reach.
For many pet owners in Halifax, the first instinct when something seems off is to wait and see whether it resolves. Sometimes that’s the right call. Knowing whether a symptom is in that category, or whether it needs attention now, is exactly what an online conversation with a vet can help you work out, without a trip across the bridge or a wait for the next available appointment.
Why Vet Telehealth Works for Pet Owners in Halifax
Halifax is a small city in many ways, but that doesn’t mean getting to a vet is always straightforward. Specialist clinics are limited, parking near busy practices can be difficult, and taking half a day off work for a question that might have had a simple answer is a frustration many local pet owners know well.
A PangoVet video call gives you a professional opinion from home, with none of the hassle. You talk through your pet’s symptoms with an experienced veterinarian, ask the questions you’ve been sitting on, and come away with specific advice and a written care guide. People are often surprised how much the written summary covers: it’s a structured record of what was discussed and what to watch for, not just a brief note. All for $40.99 CAD, no subscription, no app.
If your pet is seriously unwell or in distress, you should still contact a local in-person vet straight away. For everything else, an online call is a practical, low-fuss way to get a clear answer and decide what to do next.

It’s easy to prepare for your consultation. Just have your device ready. You can join the video call from your phone, computer, or tablet. When possible, we recommend finding a quiet area without a lot of background noise or distraction. You may choose to have your pet accompany you on all, part, or none of the call, but our vets may request to see them depending on the nature of the call.

Do I need to have my video on for the consultation?
No, you do not need to use the video feature in your virtual vet consultation. If you prefer, you can use only audio, though we do recommend you use your video for if your pet is present so we can offer you the best, most comprehensive support.
What can I expect during the call?
Our vets will ask you various questions pertaining to your specific concerns stated in your booking form. They will offer advice, or triage, and can help guide you through whatever the next steps are!
Can PangoVet issue prescriptions?
No. Prescribing generally requires an in-person veterinary client-patient relationship, which generally means a vet is in the same country and state as you. While our service does not currently support prescriptions, our team of vets can guide you through the process of why your pet may or may not need medication, what tests you may want to seek from an in-clinic vet prior to issuing the prescription, and the costs associated with the process. We can even help you find a vet local to you to assist you further!
Should I go to the vet, or should I do a PangoVet teleadvice call?
For questions about your pets health, including advice on nutrition, behaviour, training, or general medical advice, we are here to help! We offer peace of mind, and can guide you through the process of how to best help your pet, and the actionable steps you can take to keep them happy and healthy! But, PangoVet is not a substitute for an in-person veterinary exam. If your pet is experiencing any life-threatening or emergency situation, please contact a local veterinarian.
How can PangoVet help my pet?
Our service provides veterinary advice, guidance, and triage. We are well-suited to help with your questions on pet health, nutrition, behaviour, and non-urgent illnesses. We have the time to discuss your questions in depth, which cannot always happen during an in-person clinic visit. We can also help you decide when and how urgently a trip to your vet clinic is necessary. And if needed, we can help you find a local vet, if you don’t already have one.
What services does PangoVet not provide?
Our vets cannot perform physical tests, make a diagnosis, or prescribe medications. We can provide veterinary advice, guidance, and help you prepare action plans for your pet for health, nutrition, behavioural, and non-urgent illness needs.
What regions is PangoVet not able to provide services to?
At this time we are unfortunately unable to provide PangoVet services to customers in the following regions:
- British Columbia
- Ontario
This is because of legislation in the above-mentioned provinces. We are hoping that they change their legislation soon so that we can provide our services to residents of BC and Ontario.
Why do I need to book in advance? Can I do an instant consultation?
We take advance bookings to allow us to best prepare for your consultation, and to best serve as many pets as possible. We find this also helps pet parents prepare for and find suitable times for their consultations around their own busy schedules. If a time you would like is not listed, it may be due to our veterinarians helping out other pets and their parents. Please be reminded that if the nature of your call is an emergency, PangoVet is not a substitute for in-clinic veterinary care. If it is an emergency, please contact your vet immediately.
What if I can’t find a slot that suits me? Can I book a consultation at a different time?
Of course. Just email us at contact@pangovet.com with your preferred time and we will do our best to accommodate your request.
Will my PangoVet consultation call be recorded?
Your call will be recorded for quality and training purposes, and to allow our vets to review your pet’s history, to ensure they can send you the best personalized recommendations possible after the call.
